1972 140 HP Mercruiser
« on: May 14, 2018, 06:31:02 PM »
Hello.  I just inherited a 1972 MT tri-hull.  It is a very clean, well kept  boat, stored inside.  The engine is also in wonderful shape.  Every thing looks clean, all oil looks brand new.  I greased everything, bought a new battery and it started right up and runs beautifully.  The problem I am having is I cannot get the prop to engage.  I am definitely a rookie and I need help.  Thanks.

You probably need to check the shift cable(s).  There's a bracket on the rear of the engine which has the throttle/upper shift cable/intermediate shift cables.  You can take off the intermediate (the one going from the shift plate to the outdrive) and operate it manually to see if the gears will engage in forward/reverse.
