Spambot attacks!
« on: July 11, 2009, 04:56:35 PM »
Somehow the \'Bots are getting around the security that we put into the site. I\'m trying to keep up with them, but they still get in. I stop in and take them out 4 or 5 times a day at work, and more at night. As always, remember, DON\'T click on anything! I\'ll do my best to keep up with these idiots. If it is a day or so, it\'s likely that I\'m at the river enjoying one of my \'Twains!
Have fun, and enjoy the site!!
   Thanks,

Thanks for all the behind the sceens stuff done here to support this site!!

Keep up the fight, we all understand you are doing what you can.  Isn\'t there some way to either block or bounce these messages back to the source?  What if you could just download something very hungry that would eat their system up or overload it with a program that just filled up their server?  Yeah I know thats  when the good guys go bad and become bad guys.
Oh well keep trying and thanks for all you do.

Why can\'t the posters be banned and their memebership revoked. One spammer just keeps putting up one ad after another no matter how many times they are removed. Cancel his membership.

It\'s a bad deal and whoever is spamming the site is persistent. But that said, not surprising because most of the time it\'s automatic. Whats more interesting. This is not the easiest site to post stuff on, you just can\'t auto email stuff. I agree with 7483, I see the same guy posting. Cancel his membership and add more security like having to type image text that business sites use for security purposes. Solicit long time members and expand admin priv for some help. Whatever you decide Sinker you got your hands full. This is full blown, four alarm spam attack that reminds of the 90\'s spam email which goes to show there still out there.

Hey Guys,
I removed the spammer\'s accounts and banned thier email addresses. If new spammer accounts are created I will revisit the security settings.

you know,

I am confused.....These people must be \"approved\" before they can post?

I am assuming that they are signing up with a legit email address and location etc....  With the \"anti-bot\" function are they still getting in or is someone actually signing on with a legit username and email and THEN doing the deed?

Have you tried just not approving new members for a week or so and see if they\'re hacking the board?

If someone is looking at naughty sites then it is possible that a trojan is latching on to they\'re e-mail ip addy and several other ways and sliding into a back door

I upgraded the site today to the latest version of phpBB3. Supposedly it has new visual confirmation settings. So we\'ll see if the bots can still get in.
