Mark Twain Boats at Cairo, IL

I have been researching the history of Crownline Boats of Onarga and Cairo, IL from the 1950s and 1960s. This is NO affiliation or predecessor to the current Crownline Boats of West Frankfort, IL by the way.

In looking thru the \"Cairo Evening Citizen\" newspaper, I found articles mentioning that the city was trying to lure Mark Twain Industries to their town in 1966!

Crownline went belly up in 1966 and their assets were sold at liquidation auction on 13 July 1966. The city owned the factory where they were located. Duo Marine, Inc. of Decatur, IN soon made a deal to take over the buiding. They did NOT buy Crownline. However, Duo started making the Crownline boat line again in 1966.

On Monday 08 August 1966 the city council offered Mark Twain Industries a low interest loan of $31,000.00 if they were to locate in Cairo! Mark Twain was looking at purchasing the Lee Warehouse at 38th and Commercial in Cairo at that time.

Obviously, Mark Twain did not locate in Cairo, but instead located in West Frankfort, IL.

This is a little bit of interesting history of Mark Twain!
